Map Name: Bobsp1: Foreboding
Author: Bob Averill
Released: 1st December 1999
Rating: 88

Review by Forge on 19th February 2009

Duke is trapped on an island with a nuclear reactor that's getting ready to melt down due to sabotage. To save his skin, Duke must restore water to the core and retrieve, install, and activate the control center computer's memory chip. A small map with a simple layout. While not an eye catching wonder or an awe inspiring map due to it's visual aesthetics or detailing, it was still innovative during its time for some of its designs and effects; such as being able to pick up and carry a chip then install it into a computer. Game play does not involve fighting aliens at all, the only use you have for your pistol is to shoot unreachable buttons that solve a series of puzzles. A rather short map with an abrupt ending, it has a few interesting barriers to bypass without being overly challenging.

Misc. Author Info : I'm the inventor of the clear-water effect,
                         get the tutorial at Dukeworld.
                        Also, the 3d controllable ladders, the
                        SE-less portals, the 3D switches, and many other
                        revolutionary effects.

Other Levels : hundreds, but I've only RELEASED Bobsp1.map,
                        and my excellent DM map, Halflife.map.

Description : The story; The story is that while boating off the
                        Coast of Japan, your boat hit a jagged coral and
                        started to take on water. You are too far from shore
                        to make it in time, and these waters are widely
                         reknown for their abundance of Sharks, made hostile
                        towards humans by being constantly hunted for their
                        meat, a delicacy. Unfortunately, to them, YOU are
                       the delicacy. Suddenly you hear a faint "S....O....S"
                        on your radio; your cheapass radio only has a 6-mile
                        radius, and only manned installations give off SOS
                      signals, so you know now that there is dry land
                       somewhere within a 6-mile radius. After careful
                       triangulation, you race off at North/NorthEast, the
                     water up to your knees, sharks following your boat like
                     Vultures following a dying animal. The water is
                     waist-deep, and you see an island in the distance; no
                     trees or grass, just a huge installation takes up almost
                     every square foot of the land. You read the sign;
                    "Ya-Kanjii Nuclear Power Plant". Your boat hits shore,
                     and you leap out, The boat submerges completely, and
                      frusturated sharks swarm around it beneath the waves,
                     pissed-off at having barely missed a meal. It isnt
                    raining, but black clouds take up the sky; a huge storm
                    is coming. To avoid the storm, you find the front door of
                   the facility mysteriously unlocked, and make your way in;
                   You may be stranded, but you'll be DAMNED if youre gonna
                    get rained on. However, you immeditately noticed somthing
                    is wrong; The place is boarded-up, abandoned, you had
                      thought; and yet SOMEONE has activated a computer
                     terminal, and some of the lights, which were flickering;
                     maybe power-flow issues; you use the Ancient
                      Green-Screen Computer Terminal to determine what the
                      source of the power fluctiations is, and why the
                      alarm is sounded; To your dismay, You learn that the
                      Central Nuclear Reactor has only hours until it melts
                    down, due to seemingly deliberate tampering with the
                    power routers; The main reactors, though all online and
                     functioning, have been re-routed from the coolant pumps,
                    which are vital to preventing overheating of the core,
                    to an unkown destination somewhere in the complex.
                     It is obvious that someone is here with you; and
                    they're trying to cause a meltdown that will not only
                   kill you, but everyone on the coast, and inland for
                    quite a ways. You immediatley set to work fixing the
                   damage the mysterious vandal has done, knowing that
                    everyone's lives depend on you.

Additional Credits To : Ikka Keranen, for inspiring me to make all my
                        maps above and beyond any map anyone's ever seen
                         before, and for the folks at the JSBUILD forum,
                        for playtesting my maps and boosting my ego. ;)

* Play Information *

Episode and Level # : It only works that way in DooM, stupid.
Single Player : Yes of course.
DukeMatch 2-8 Player : No, it is slanted for single-player only.
Cooperative 2-8 Player : No, that wouldn't really work.
Difficulty Settings : It's pretty much all puzzles, so that doesnt apply.
New Art : No, but you'll think there is.
New Music              : Nah
New Sound Effects      : Nope. I never put extra files in my levels;
                     I like to show what can be done with regular old BUILD.

=====================================================================

* Construction *

Base : Made from scratch, that's how REAL mappers do it.
Level Editor(s) Used : BUILD. (why do they even ask?)
Art Editor(s) Used : None.new art is for wussies who can't make the most
                         of the art that comes with the game.
Construction Time      : I don't know. Time flies when I'm mapping. ;)
Known Bugs/Problems    : None.

* Where to get this MAP file *

File location : If you have the text file, you have the map.

=====================================================================

*Important Information*

Installation : None. My maps dont have any extra files, remember?
                        everything is done with plain old BUILD.

Important Notes : Please people, I made this map and started the
                         Bobsp series because there are nothing but crappy
                        maps out there. Put EFFORT into your maps, dont think
                        that BUILD has limits, simply form a mental image of
                        the place you want to make as if it were real, then
                        build it in every detail; don't stop adding details,
                        shading/shadows, and tweaking textures until it looks
                        EXACTLY like what you pictured. Make maps as if
                         you're mapping for UnReal; dont think that since
                       BUILD is old that it cant look better than the game
                        levels; it can look damn good, and be interactive
                        in ways other games can't touch, and my maps are
                       proof. Be inspired, and make maps that are better
                        looking and more intercative than anything you've
                      played, and dont settle for anything less than perfect.
