I remember other ancient maps as well. Aqua series (which were pretty good in their time), Duke Prox, Lunar1 (a notably scary looking space map), Anarchy, Sand etc etc.

I got a few maps named Lunar 1, Lunar 2...etc but they're all crap.
Would have been interesting to know which Lunar 1 you're referring to, Nancsi  :)

I'm still curious  ;)

Did that know hurt your eyes playing the game that way Methy? with the video settings on low.

Not really, I loved the game. But sometimes it was hard to make it out what I was looking at ! And since that lasted from age 8 to maybe 10 or 11 (until we switched from a DOS/windows 3.1 based 486DX4 100 mhz to a 500mhz with windows 95), I also didn't understand any of the English Dukequotes or text. But I still loved the game anyway.  We already made our little maps with my brother back then, they were crappy maps with no shading, no sound and Doomdoors for the only effects.  I remember we tried to make a map based on the Chateau of Chambord (if you google that you'll see what an endeavour that would be!), you can imagine how it looked nothing like it.

But it's really when we got the 500mhz computer that I enjoyed the game more, I could have been playing tons of newers games but I still stick to Duke3D because I could finally play with video set to High and a higher resolution something which looks much closer to what it still looks like nowadays.

Also remember a map called "The Base". It was a decent level for its time.

yes ! that was one of my first favorite maps. it was made by a guy named georg buol as the sequel to his first map which barely took 2 minutes to complete and was set in a cavern-like environment featuring a seemingly fifteen-feet-high, sector-made replica of a remmington box of shotgun shells, which looked amazing to me as a kid for some reason.

anarchy.map was a good map too as well as inferno.map ( http://dukerepository.com/maps/Inferno ), and brett gmoser's infamous 'demo' map that came with his mapping guide. i also remember a series of maps which i really liked back in the day, the 'bob' series (not bobsp, just bob as in, bob1.map, bob2.map and so on) by robert carter. they can still be found on dn-r http://dukerepository.com/maps/Bob1:_Night_Out etc. looking at them nowadays they look like shit but back then i was in awe, the car in the first map was the most amazing thing ever built for duke to me

I had both The Base and Bob1 as a kid as well, but I could have sworn The Base was called Island something?

now that you mention it Island.map was the name of the prequel i was referring to !

methy

Oh yeah for a second I thought you meant the base was island. I had Island, but not The Base.

Still unable to find that 2 houses map I long lost :P

I've found screenshots of Island and Bob1 on my photobucket while looking for something else :

Also, does anyone recall these 3 maps? The filenames say 'Downtown', 'Church' and 'Airport' which might be the name of the maps. I know they were on those old PC Magazine CD but I don't have those here (they're at my parents' home), and the names of the map seem very generic... But maybe you guys know and have them? IIRC they were good maps.

I remember that Airport map, started in a plane that had crashed. I got it on a CD that was included with the Finnish Duke3D map design book that got me started in the first place.
