Title: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Puritan on 08 December 2011, 01:36:45
We decided to give mappers some credits and honour by having the limelight shining on their maps and works in the Duke Nukem 3D community. Both past and present mappers.

Mapper of the month will not have a theme.

It's more like a surprise, if you like. It could be Pascal Rouaud. Or it could be a long forgotten mapper....
You never know

Duke University!!!!

Wish I could be a fly on the wall on that 'university'.
Imagine Dukes reaction when the professor pronounce something like this: "...extra terrestrial life is nonsense and just a product of sci-fi writers twisted minds!"

And on which standards will you judge the mapper of the month ?

Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Forge on 23 December 2011, 20:22:48
I'm not too involved in the selection process, but I think a qualifier would be at least the release of two single player maps of high quality
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 24 December 2011, 00:50:18
Ahh, that's a bummer. Most of my more recent stuff is tied up in the next WGRealms 2 release, which at this rate won't be out for another year.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Forge on 24 December 2011, 05:25:57
I don't know if DM maps are considered or not, and I'm guessing that maps tied up in large releases (like TC's) aren't even on the radar (bit difficult to feature one individual's work when it's intermingled into, and a piece of something larger - it would need it's own designated map release page)

Thy shall not fear!
Your time will come. It will be a new mapper each month  ;)

Well, mapper of the month is just a kind of nice advertising so ?

With a special page to show his work, critics and even perhaps an interview.
So all people here will be the" mapper of the month",if i understand.
And perhaps twice if he works enough  ;)
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Forge on 24 December 2011, 12:58:12
Yes, everyone here who meets the requirements will eventually be mapper of the month. I may have to throw a bitch tantrum to get our modest administrator to include himself in that list though  ;)
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Puritan on 24 December 2011, 13:26:08
:D  I'm on that list but you'll have to scroll down a bit.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 24 December 2011, 13:42:47
If mapper of the month must be someone from this forum, and there are currently 14 members, then all I have to do is wait 13 months  ;D

Although the thing is it'd be pretty hard to argue what a 'quality' release is wouldn't it? Is it a map that's great fun? Or is it a map that has a high score based on details, architecture, and all those other catagories? Hopefully the standard is low so the two maps I've released so far are counted  :P lol!
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Forge on 24 December 2011, 14:01:32
Being a member of the forum is not a requirement to be mapper of the month. Any map/mod worth being hosted here is the "qualifier"

It's Gambini! But I'm confused... what good maps has he released lately?  :P  ;)

Edit: wow, the review for It Lives is a giant wall of text which is very difficult to read. It could use some paragraphs  :-\

I agree.
I just copy/paste received txt files into HTML.
I did a few adjustments to Forge's review layout. ( hope he doesn't showel sand up my ass..  ;D )

I have no issues with any adjustments to the reviews I submit, as long as you don't go crazy and change it to something like, "I hate this guy and his work sucks monkey balls...Score = -7"
Unless, of course, that's what I really wrote.  8)

i'll start putting spaces between paragraphs from now on  :P

Yeah, I think Gambini deserves to be honoured on our site.
He is making levels only with the Mapster32 and the default GRP file of DN3D as his tools.
With an output that actually is shaking avid Dukers ( mappers).
Many mappers today is taking advantage of the HRP/ Polymer or custom art/models/scripts in order to stand out of the crowd. Gambini doesn't need to go down that road ....

Well deserved honours, Gambini!  :)

Yes,that's sad.
But the result is always the same even with new stuff :average  :(

I 'm totally agree with the selection of the mapper of this month.
It could not be an other body than Gambini but...where's Gambini ?

And i'm just a little surprised that this "show" has just a so poor stuff.
Why not try make it unique by implementing an interview, asking for his old/comin' work, his personnal motivation...
It could be awesome  :D

while I agree that an interview, or a small paragraph, about the mapper of the month's background would be pretty neat, it's not completely feasible.  The selected mapper of the month could be somebody who hasn't mapped for Duke in a decade and getting an interview or a small bit of information on them will be close to impossible. Best leave it in a format that can apply to anyone chosen.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Arghantyl on 02 January 2012, 00:12:09

I'm not completely convinced by the last argument  ???

Because it can fail for some bodys,we will not try to make something good ?
Interview can be an impossible task sometimes but why not a kind of small biography ?

Perhaps each month,we can complete an encyclopedia on mappers and their work.
I see something like that.It can be awesome  :D
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month

I agree, sometimes it's nice to know more about the man behind the map. It would be handy to have a bunch of information in one place, like how old he is, which country he lives in, how long he's been mapping/how many maps he's made etc..
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month

I disagree.
If somebody wants to open a wiki thread about MoM, that's ok.
But I will not put up an official mapper wiki for many reasons.
MoM is blown out of proportions by some...
It's their WORK and nothing else that is supposed to be highlighted.

And sometimes,i've seen a lot of perso informations writen in template and their e-mail.
A lot of mappers have written they want to be contacted about their work.

And a small paragraph about their personal skill cannot harm.

At least,it can be posted here.

A mapper wiki as a separate section is certainly something that we could add to the site though.
It depends on if there will be enough submissions to this issue.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month

Maybe mappers could submit their own information? At least in some cases, which would help ease the squeeze.

I can´t believe you chosed CK3d as mapper of the month. Mostly knowing that MRCK hasn´t been honored yet.

Jokes aside, A hell of a mapper. He polyshed his style so much in his latest releases that i find more of a brand in his maps than in Roch maps.

Ok, just to clear things up, Aymeric Nocus, CK3d and MRCK are the same mapper right? Because that guy's aliases totally confuse the heck out of me.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Merlijn on 04 March 2012, 13:29:42
Yes, that's the same guy. I'm not sure why he changed his alias.. Anyway, great mapper who made some of my favorite city levels. His more recent semi-classic style (AMC pleaser, Metropolian mayhem) looks very good as well, especially the sector based shading.

If there's one thing I dislike about his maps, it's the overuse of those annoying turrets.  :P

Now, what questions do you guys want me to ask?
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 14 May 2012, 11:21:16
Where do they get their inspiration for mapping.
Who inspires them.
What's their own favourite map.
What's their favourite map of all time.
How long it typically takes them to make a full map.
What is their favourite aspects of a map (e.g action, puzzles, platforming, exploring, atmosphere)

That's just off the top of my head.

I can't really think of anything good to ask, but perhaps;

> Their favorite from their own maps?
> Do you see mapping as competitive?
> Are you a virgin? :D

Well the first question is about whether they get their inspiration from real life locations, or drawings they see, or just think them up somehow.
The second one is whether there is a mapper or mappers who has inspired their personal style or overall themes.

I forgot about the interviews. I went over and read all of them... except yours  :P

WOW those are long answers. I'd definitely like to read it at some point, but only when I get a full spare half hour or so  :P

@Puritan. There should really be a question like "what advice would you give to other (maybe beginning) mappers?". You can't have interviews of the greatest mappers of all time and not let them share a touch of wisdom like that  ???

Since Loke is mapper of the month, I decided to also check out his work in games other than Duke3D.

I've played Computer Lab for Doom II : http://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/addons/computer-lab
Solid small map, nothing really add. Enjoyed it.

Facility for Half-Life : http://www.moddb.com/games/half-life/addons/facility
Difficulty is uneven : at the beginning of the map, I had to try 5 or 6 times to kill the 3 soldiers, and then the rest of the map was relatively easy.
However, I haven't played a HL map in quite a long time so I wasn't sure how to launch it. What I did was start a normal HL game then go into the console and type "map facilityfinal".
That put me into the map, however the maps ends when that vent breaks and you fall down into a dark pit and hear monster screams. Is this the real ending of the map or is there more that I missed because I did not launch the map the way it should be? That seemed quite short. Thanks.

Okay, that was a cool small map then.

I also just played your Fortress of Resurrection for Quake. http://www.moddb.com/games/quake/addons/fortress-of-resurrection
That was short but really good. I love "square" architecture which is why I liked it so much. I think that was better than your Doom and HL maps. My only complain is that the end boss fight is a bit difficult.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Loke on 26 August 2012, 20:41:57
Yeah, the Shambler fight can be a bit of a bitch especially since their primary attack is so strong. The design of the area is also a bit cramped which most likely add to the difficulty. Anyway, good that you enjoyed even though it was more or less just a map I made to get hang of the editor again before I started working on my Half-Life mod.

If you've got Doom 64 I also made a ultra-small pwad (http://doom64ex.sourceforge.net/forum/index.php?topic=304.0) for the Doom64 EX program in case you're interested.

Congrats to Fernando. Heh, I was reading through all of the interviews, it's pretty interesting. MRCK added a wall of text, but it was fun to read what an impact red4 had on him. You even got an interview from Ale. :o

On a related note: could the music be removed or at least set to 'off' buy default? It was pretty annoying, every time I went to a different mapper it started playing again.

congrats! One year anniversary of the site so you should be honored for both accomplishments.

You made some real nice space and urban maps with great atmospheres. Some of the puzzles and hidden areas in your earlier works that were required to find/solve in order to progress posed some frustration, but your later works are well thought out and very fluid. All had good, solid ambiance.

But I want to have all the questions as they are and asked to all participants.
In that way it's easier to "compare" mappers.

Title: Re: Mapper of the Month

Yeah, apparently his best map scored an 82, which isn't all that fantastic given all the other great mappers that have already been selected. Gambini has some good suggestions.

Or you could choose somebody who has revolutionized TROR mapping and polymer lights. But who could that be... hmm  :P
Damn that probably set me back a few months  :P

Why of course I was referring to DanM, he's done some truly amazing stuff.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Forge on 01 January 2013, 15:32:32
If you don't agree with Robert Carter as a choice, just wait till the end of 2014 when the pickings start getting really slim. MoM is a neat little idea, but how long do you think it can last before names start getting drawn out of a hat at random?

edit:

There's top tier mappers (consistently produced high quality projects or made contributions/ground breaking ideas):

William G, Maarten O., James S., Lezing, Micky C, Billy Boy, Bob Masters, C3PO, Paul B., Devastator, Enric Alvarez, Undertaker, quakis, Geoffrey D., Henri K, Supertanker, Taivo M., KaiseR, Kevin Cools

Then the second tier (lack of releases or lack of highly rated projects on a consistent basis - sorry if i offend anyone -just my opinion):

Mia Max, Ben Roffelsen, Mike Norvak, Mister Sinister, Hangnail, Carthief, Sang, Numan, Cedric Lutes, High Treason, Daniel Aashage, David B, EmericaSkater, Eye del Cul, Fernito, Robert Travis, Ryan Lennox, Sanek, Iggy, Forge, James Duncan, Law, Spiker, Papamonos, Turpuli, Steambull

this isn't a complete list, i'm sure i missed several people, but I need to amend my comments (i didn't add names that already made MoM). there should be enough names to last for about four years.

So the question is, does it really matter what order people are elected to MoM? I don't think it would be a good idea to instill any specific method because now you're trying to rate who's the better mapper, or who contributed more to the community. With that mentality then it doesn't matter who gets picked; people would always argue that someone else is a better choice due to their personal preference or relationship with certain people. It'd be like asking me to pick between James Stanfield or Mike Norvak. I wouldn't do that.

Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: MSandt on 01 January 2013, 18:26:10
Yeah it could be simply renamed to Duke Hall of Fame or something, which would remove the "mapper per month" obligation.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 02 January 2013, 00:43:02
That would be a good idea once we run out of the good mappers and things start to wind down. But 4 years sounds like a long time so I think we'll be ok for a while. I wonder what the community would look like in 4 years...

And there are some fantastic mappers in that 2nd tier, many of them probably better than myself (thankyou for the top tier referral), it's just too bad they don't release much stuff  :-\

It's rather sad how few maps are being released nowadays...I think everyone is aiming for big grand maps and not making fun but not groundbreaking 3DR style maps any more. Hopefully we'll get some new mappers soon.

Also, top tier? Me? No way. I take forever to release anything and while WG and Geof and the rest are playing in the stadium, I'm kicking the ball against the wall in my backyard. :P But thanks for the thought.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 11 March 2013, 01:42:02
Well it's the old story of everyone being busy with university/work/family these days. It's not like before when everyone was at high school and had plenty of time to work on maps. What the community needs is a fresh injection of young mappers who have the time.

Unfortunately, the cooler features like polymer which are more likely to draw young mappers in (so they don't have to spend tedious time shading) are unfinished and unoptimised. Which means that when Duke 3D+ comes on Steam later this month and Duke gets a surge of interest, new people are going to be put off by the unfinished status of several features (like multiplayer).

Definitely an interesting interview though.

IMO Drek's probably going to be the WG 2.0  :P
So far he seems to be developing an open outdoor style with terrain. It's a little bit rough since he's inexperienced compared to veterans, but I think people will agree with me when they play his part of the CBP.(Sorry for off-topic)

Funny how everyone interviewed is mostly against Polymer and the HRP.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: Micky C on 02 June 2013, 12:46:12
As someone who started out prefering and mapping for the HRP, one of the main reasons I tried out classic mapping was because the HRP tiles in the tile selector screen just took so damn long to load that it was noticeably slowing me down.
It was only later that I discovered that the classic tile set was a lot more flexible than the HRP due to its ambiguity.

Still, if you wanted to, you could make some very nice looking maps with the HRP. Take DanM, Mia Max, and David B for example. There's probably a higher proportion of players who like the HRP compared to mappers.
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month
Post by: MSandt on 02 June 2013, 13:28:15
Yeah all those are post-HRP mappers whileas the people who've been interviewed belong to the old guard. So, new blood is needed to produce maps for Polymer & the HRP.

Interesting interview, seems WG won't be coming back then.  :(
It's cool that he mentioned me and Maarten, those were indeed good times (OGBB was so much fun to build).

QuoteFunny how everyone interviewed is mostly against Polymer and the HRP.

Can't speak for the entire "old guard", but I remember initially being pissed off because all of the texture/pallete combo's I created in classic mode suddenly looked like shit with the hi-res textures. That wasn't a good start. However, things improved over time. Also, Imperium initially was constructed with the HRP in mind, and we tried to make sure it looks good both ways.

I don't play a lot of games nowadays, so I have no interest in buying a computer strong enough to handle polymer.  :P

Congratulations to High Treason for mapper of the month.

If I'm being honest, the first thought that popped into my head was "hmm he's not that great a mapper", but then I remembered rather enjoying a few of his maps. That, on top of all the new/unique effects he pulled off in his latest map are a credit to his work.

deja vu. that's what i thought when i seen my name pop up

interesting interview HT (you should still try to push yourself on your trimming and detailing skills while you push yourself on what mechanics you can achieve.)

Was reading Bob's interview and he's right that we haven't really explored the alien mythology. Why did the aliens invade? Were they after something else beside our women? What is their homeworld like?

Yeah otherwise the list of interviewees would consist of just me.

You should do James next, definitely one of the most significant figures.

But please fix the crappy fancy flash format. Now you can't link to individual pages. It's amateurish to rely on templates anyway.

Just dropping in to say thanks.

Hey, I might not be great, but I try to be. I do push myself with the visuals, but I do feel I've nearly hit my ceiling for that. I've had Mapster32 open again anyway, so undoubtedly we'll find out in the future.

James is a great mapper. The problem is his solo and single player map repertoire is severely limited. Most of his stuff is in huge TCs, multi-author TCs, or CBP participation. His two major solo projects are a PyP map and a dukeplus map.
when i have time i could post up for PyP and his repent map so there are at least two of his projects hosted he can take lone credit for.

I see KaiseR is mapper of the month, but there's no interview. IIRC he didn't include contact details with his text files because he didn't want to be contacted, however he still might check up on Duke4.net occasionally.

Why don't we send him a notification there to invite him for an interview, even if it takes a while?

I'm assuming this is him: http://forums.duke4.net/user/59-kaisersoze/ (last online about 2 months ago)
We can also send an email to the address he used to register the forum.

Congratulations to David B for getting mapper of the month. He's made some of the best if not the best levels for the HRP ever.

Now you potentially say you get to be mapper of 2013  ;)

Having said that, I'd either like to be January or December to have a similar claim. Said Micky to no one in particular  :-X

Matter of fact: I'm putting the M.o.M series on hold for a while.
Not sure for how long, but there will be no entries in 2014.

So I might rename the pages from the existing 2012 and 2013.....etc, into season I , Season II....etc

I usually don't comment too much in this topic but I felt it was appropriate to say a few words about this months candidate:

He have deserved a thumbs up !
I know, and you know, that he stepped way out of line in the past.
But I've seen many others that have stepped out of line in the DN3D community the last 15 years or so.
Including myself  ;)

Time to move on, I think Sanek deserves this little entry in our M.o.M series!

I gather that his earlier days were somewhat "dodgy" (all of that was before my time here), but whatever his past is, these days he makes great maps like Bridge Between Two Islands.

Also glad to see Mapper of the Month still exists. When you said you didn't have enough time for it I was wondering "how long does it take to email a few questions?"  ;D

Hey, thank you both for commenting of it. Some time ago, I don't even beelive that I can be a m.o.m.
It's awesome that there's really no more anyone (well, except Commando :)) who remembers those times when almost everybody dislike me. MY REALLY GOOD MAPS, Bad Night, Duke Theft Auto, AMC/DNR feuds - I hope I closed this part of community's life with my recent releases.

How times have changed and history repeats itself.
Apparently, by word from our current m.o.m., thanks to steam, mapping is once more competitive (i'm assuming it's mostly about DM again, but it could be about trying to get stuff popular or keeping things on the first page of the workshop)
Title: Re: Mapper of the Month

I'm having trouble of figuring out what you're trying to say in your post. I feel like I'm missing some context or background.

Edit: Hmm I semi-get the context actually reading the MOM interview. Yeah I don't think there are any singleplayer maps released on steam that really hold up to those created by pre-steam mappers. Part of that may be the lack of experience, however I believe a bigger part of it is that Megaton players/mappers seem to love the idea of shoving hundreds of enemies into a map and calling it "good" rather than actually having some well-developed and thought-out progression and combat. DM maps are pretty big at the moment since they're relatively quick to pump out.

Looks like Micky C is finally mapper of the month! I guess they save the best for last ;) :P

Does my best map really have to be Libraryl though? Something like Parkade or the DNF 2013 DLC would be more suitable. I understand that those are collaborative works to an extent but people might click on the 'best map' thinking it's the pinacle of my work which is clearly not the case. Could it please be changed to Parkade since that's vanilla? I'm sure Paul B wouldn't mind, and it's not like the guy carried me with the high rating.

Btw some of the paragraphs in the middle start off with An attached to the first word like "Anthat" and "AnSomething". Considering those weren't in the original text I submitted, a quick fix would be appreciated :)

Otherwise thanks for putting it up.

Yeah Steam has been a bit of a disappointment with respect to quality.
Some might disrespect the quality factor of maps on the steam workshop, and well some are just new guys starting out and learning. Of course some seem to think there king of the hill god mode mappers right off the bat due to new generations. But by all means I try my best to push quality and I think it shows. Steam users aren't as dumb as some people think they know what there playing they can see it!

Yes once your map is on on top it seems most of the mappers will hate your guts even ignoring you for a month or two possibly remove you as friend and down rating your map to try and get it away from the top I have had even non mappers do this to me simply because the attention. Hell some will even tell there friends to down rate as well going the distance to get your map hidden. But the amount of posters has really slimmed down now.

why the sour grapes about Steam?
If it takes all that attention and effort to sabotage workshop items, then you must be doing something right.

@Mickyif: you don't like the map that represents you on the m.o.m. page, then release something for once instead of posting all those interesting screenshots @ Duke4

All those interesting shots are from my AMC TC Episode 2 maps, which means they still won't be seen as my "best map".

Btw is the best map a code-based automatic thing? I.e will it update if I do release a brand new vanilla map that scores higher?
It's a damn shame my DNF DLC map is bundled in with Davox. My map is relatively fun and well made, if it had been released as a separate vanilla map (which minus the bike I could easily have done), then it would have been very well received. As it stands it's in the shadow of Davox's orgasmic awesomeness.

too much dabbling, not enough production

A while ago I decided to withdraw from WGR2. Most of the content I made for it wasn't that good, and it was during a period where my skills were improving rapidly (we all know you shouldn't keep working on the same stuff during that period). Not that those maps would count as individual stuff either since they'd be released with Norvak's stuff.
Plus DT's ability to work on the TC is unreliable at best in his current (semi?) retired state. I may yet port over some of the more complete/salvageable bits to the AMC TC episode 3 where I can hopefully do more with them.

That room you mentioned was just something I was fooling around with very briefly and was never intended to be a playable map.
Not enough production? I've been working my ass off for the AMC TC Episode 2.

Is Mike von Skellington in the running for mapper of the month? His two maps hosted here that I checked out didn't look super flash, but some of his unreleased stuff, such as "city crackdown fragments" easily makes him some kind of mapping god.

I think I adapted one of the more classic-styled maps of the pack to vanilla Duke, added gameplay and polymer lights a while ago. Maybe I'll try to dig it up and it can get reviewed.
