Calculated is a Dutch rockband from Heerhugowaard, founded on the 11th of november, 2008. Our music incorporates various styles and is generally very diverse, but we still have a signature sound (and a lot of curly hair!). To describe our sound is pretty hard in itself - sweet pianopieces, pshychedelic sounds, melanchonic vocal melodies.. they mix remarkably well with heavy guitarriffs, growling baslines, crazy synthesizersolo's and agressive drumming. Sometimes you'll hear all of the above in the same song! Despite all that, the songs still remain catchy and memorable. We invite you to take a listen!
Members:
Merlijn van Oostrum - vocals/keyboards/guitar
Maarten van Oostrum - vocals/keyboards/guitar
Ivar de Hoogt - drums
Lars Jonker - bass
Influences:
Porcupine tree, Pink Floyd, Metallica, John Frusciante, System of a down
Sounds Like:
experimental, with a slight emphasis on mental.

Thanks guys! I'll make a band topic soon enough.
I think the best comparison I've heard thus far was "you guys kinda sound like Pink Floyd meets Metallica!" Heh, it's not that far from the thruth I guess. :P
In the mean time you can click on this link:
http://www.ffcentraal.nl/band-best-band-of-holland/calculated (http://www.ffcentraal.nl/band-best-band-of-holland/calculated)
and press on the big button on the left that says 'STEM!' (which means 'vote' in dutch). We have to gather as much votes as possible in order to make to the finals of this band competition called "best band of holland", so any help would be greatly appreciated! ;)
Also, you can vote again on each day.
Live is life!
Seems that you guys are enjoying yourselves during gigs 8)
Yes we do! ;D
Thanks for the topic, Forge. Don't worry about the deleted post, things like that can happen sometimes.
Anyway, we also have our own website now: www.calculatedband.nl (http://www.calculatedband.nl)
Oh and keep voting of course! http://www.ffcentraal.nl/band-best-band-of-holland/calculated (http://www.ffcentraal.nl/band-best-band-of-holland/calculated)
Bump!
Still voting every day
http://www.ffcentraal.nl/band-best-band-of-holland/calculated
That's the spirit! 8)
BUMB! We moved up to the 7th spot, one more to go and we're in the finals! So please keep voting every day. 8)
Where I can download your songs\albums? (If this is for free, of course)
You can listen for free on our myspace: www.myspace.com/calculated1 (http://www.myspace.com/calculated1)
Our website has several live videos as well: www.calculatedband.nl (http://www.calculatedband.nl)
I know about this, but is there any way I can download your mp3's? Just to have this stuff on my PC
There´s no online place to download them, but I can send you some tracks if you like. :)
well now I feel special 8)
extra thanks, it was nice to have them for road tunes for that 23 hour drive from Arizona to Washington

It would be nice, thanks! :D
So where did the band end up ranking?
They're going to upload the final ranking on wednesday, so let's keep our fingers crossed.. ;)
Thanks for voting btw, wether we make it to the finals or not.
@ Eddy: I'll send you some tracks soon, probably tommorow evening.
Our final ranking: 4th place! We made it to the finals! :)
So we made one hell of a jump this last week (probably helped that we spammed people during our gigs as well :P). Anyway, I want to thank you guys very much for voting. (y)
Of course, you all live too far away to come and see the finals, but we'll try to get some recordings for you. :)
Wow! Congrats, Merlijn! 8)
Cool. Now you need to win it all, get a sweet recording contract, go on tour, come to Seattle.
All so I can see a show 8)
Sorry Calculated didn't win :'(
still would like to see the video, if there is one
Late reply: they said they would put the shows online afterwards, but so far they haven't done so. :( I can show you some bootlegs from a mobile phone, but I'm afraid that's all we got at the moment.
And hey, at least we did make the finals, that gave us a lot of media coverage already (winning would have been the icing on the cake, but oh well.. juries generally don't seem to like prog very much so we didn't really expect to win anyway.)
For the ones that are interested:
Calculated - New Horizons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ygAx9G_s0o)
New vid, might be a bit dark, but you can hear the song ;)
We didn't post much updates here at all, but right now we have 1 gig a week & we made 2 new songs (no video online..yet!). Also we're gonna record a new EP soon!
So yeah...things are going very nice :)
More vids! We have a much better camera now, so now we can show you guys some video's with better image and sound quality:
New horizons (full song) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiSXSsJ6EXc)
and
Acoustic cover of Mercy (original by Duffy) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-qGwb8LMhc&feature=channel&list=UL)
We have another gig coming up next saturday, we hope to make some more vids then. 8)
I listen to these while I'm browsing around and drinking my coffee first thing in the morning. So no offense, but I don't care about the quality of the vids the first time I listen (you guys are ugly and I want to keep the coffee off my computer monitor ;D)
When New Horizons started I thought I was listening to Lunatic Fringe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqUa_G1h3pw
The Acoustic cover of Mercy, I was kinda zoning out on a thread and wasn't really paying attention, then it snuck up on me and I thought I was listening to an old Bob Dylan song
The Lunatic fringe intro is similar indeed (but the rest of the song isn't obviously).
I can hear a familiar sound... a scent....a touch of early Pink Floyd 8)
This is good, Oostrums!
On a side note: Merlijn! Left(?) handed guitar... how about having the strings upside down as well? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVfoDO05xWM&feature=share)...
Thanks! Yeah, there's certainly a Pink Floyd vibe going on in New horizons (especially the first part, the ending gets a bit more 'metal' 8))
And guess what, my strings are indeed upside down. :P
We went into the studio this summer to record a new EP, you can listen to the entire thing now by clicking here (http://soundcloud.com/calculatedmusic/sets/newhorizons/)
Tracklisting:
A new message (intro)
The dissident
New horizons
Into the dirt
The messenger
Another side
(last 2 songs are new, we wrote them a few months ago).
Enjoy the music! :D
the messenger = deep purple meets iron maiden
Heh, I guess that's a pretty accurate description. :) One major influence on 'The messenger' was the song Stargazer by Rainbow, and that band also had Richie Blackmore on guitar.
another side - pink floyd-ish
Here's a recent live version of Another side:

Hah! Finally some better recording equipment ;)
Reminds me of some early Jethro Tull recordings.
Sounds great guys 8)
Edit: JC Kompleks ??? ;D
Thanks! It's recorded produced at a professional studio, we were going for a 70's vibe and I think we pulled it off. We've recieved a lot of positive feedback so far. :D

JC Kompleks
Wha?
Your bass drum 8)
Heh, well JC Kompleks is the name of the place and it's their drumkit. ;)
New song, called Waves of sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9fdHZvVLBU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9fdHZvVLBU)

Cool laid back tune.

Haha. I take that as a big compliment!
It's true that John Lord is a inspiration for me, especially on more recent Calculated tracks :)
very nice
been saying from the start - deep purple reborn
side note:
i have an elliptical exercise machine & i listen to random tunes while working out ('s the only real workout i can get that doesn't over stress my bad back)
i am the monster is an excellent song for it. the energy of the song transfers into good energy towards the exercise
look out jane fonda
Nice Forge! (ultra-late response, I know)
In other news: we won an important band contest, there were over 20 bands participating so it's quite a big thing. Especially since bands in our genre usually don't win anything (jury's tend to play it safe and pick mainstream sounding bands). So yeah, we're quite happy now! :D
This also means we won free studio time. So you guys can expect some new professional recordings coming soon! 8)
That's awesome, Merlijn 8)
Congrats!
i still want free tickets when you get famous and play seattle

Recent performance in a big theater, in front of hundreds of people. It was a very cool experience. 8) Some older members (like ck3d) might remember this song, I recorded a version of it years ago and posted it on AMC. It's called 'Reveal'.
Wow! Must have been a cool experience.
Merlijn has improved on vocals I'd say 8)

Thanks. And yeah I agree, Merlijn is getting better and better on live vocals :)
pretty crisp and clean for a live performance
Thanks, yeah we're just getting more and more polished with our live-performances, some of the older ones tended to be a bit sloppy. I cringe when I watch some of our performances from 2010 lol.
Luckily, we've improved a lot on that field. Songs like this have to be clean, otherwise the magic is lost. :)
I can also post the old recording, for those who are interested.
might as well. just like re-envisioned maps, it can be interesting to see where things have changed when put side-by-side
Well, I found out that it's still on my old acidplanet account, so you can stream it and compare it to the recent live version:
http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=564072&t=7522 (http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=564072&t=7522)
This was actually way before Calculated, and a trip down to memory lane for me. I didn't even play guitar back then, so the song only has vocals, piano and various keyboards (including fake keyboard drums :P).
my browser doesn't get along with that site. i couldn't get anything to play on that pop-up media player of theirs
Yeah, it's an ancient site.. Over here, it works with IE, but it doesn't work with firefox.
I'll upload it to a better site for you, stay tuned.

"This video has been removed because its content violated YouTube's Terms of Service."
: O
Oostrum criminal activity strikes again
Yeah, youtube are being assholes, basically they removed it because it generated too many views in a small period of time. Which was 'suspicious', even though all we did was sharing the link on forums like this and facebook.. Fuckers. >:(
At least they were nice enough to make a copy of the video, so here's the new link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzjj_zBiVZk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzjj_zBiVZk)
all those women behind Maarten are checking out his ass
is it a coincidence that there's nothing but women behind him?
*accusations of special "groupie" tickets are starting to formulate*
Lol. You got me and Maarten mixed up. Maarten is behind the piano, I'm singing and playing guitar. ;)
Have you listened to the old version? I'm just curious how it compares to the new live version.
sorry, i was busy checking out your ass
this picture confused me
(http://www.calculatedband.nl/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Rocking-Maarten-CAM.jpg)
the version in the video sounds cleaner and more refined from the vocals to the instrumentation (that could be attributed to recording quality though). The guitar work makes a huge difference
Haha, I understand the confusion. Maarten and I used to switch instruments during the show: about half of the songs featured me on guitar and Maarten on keyboard, and then we would switch it around. This slowly changed over time, because all of the new songs were written with me on guitar and Maarten on keyboard. It's better this way IMO, now we have a clearly established line-up and Maarten and I can both focus on one particular instrument.
It's funny how the live video sounds cleaner and more refined, the old version was recorded at home and certainly wasn't recorded in one take.
For the ones that are interested:
As a side-project, I made a solo project with help from other friends/musicans. Including Merlijn & Rob Wijkstra (A.k.a. Highwire). I'm really satisfied with the results, so I hope you guys enjoy it too! :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNcUO65jThQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNcUO65jThQ)
Reviving the topic once again heh. :)
Here's a recent live-vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHCuqPuTNgY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHCuqPuTNgY)
It's a cover of Enter sandman, followed by our own song 'A better man?'.
We also went into the studio to make a recording of 'A better man?', so expect the studio version to pop up soon. :)
pretty tight for a live performance
you should stick to one vocalist or get better microphones. the duet doesn't really compliment each other except when minimized (like during the chorus)imo
also, more cowbell
^
Thanks for commenting! We're not changing the dual vocal thing though, it's part of our signature sound and we usually get a lot of positive feedback about it. :)
In other news: NEW STUDIO TRACK! :D :D
I think it's the best recording we've done so far, but I'll let you be the judge. ;)
Click here for: A better man? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWLqIb9NpBs)
now that was excellent.
and the vocals sounded better and complimentary. maybe is was the equipment or the sound board setting from the previous video (like somebody's mike was turned up higher or somebody wasn't projecting into their mike enough)
also
more cowbells
Thanks! :D
We don't have a sound guy for our gigs, so the live sound isn't always perfectly balanced. That's the good thing about studio recordings: the producer can keep mixing until the balance is right. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euVlHycNaxc
30 minutes of a full gig for those who are interested. Including Enter Sandman & A Better Man with 2 guitar players instead of 1 :D
damn that was tight!
stop fucking around with duke3d maps/web sites and aggressively pursue a recording contract.
i'd rather see you in concert than another map
Haha I'm flattered that you like it so much, thanks man! Unfortunately todays music industry is completely fucked up so I'm not sure if we'll ever get that change. :-\
We keep doing what we do though, and we love doing it. Regardless of the amount of succes we love it. And don't worry, we still spend a lot more time on music then on mapping. ;)
Also, we recorded another new song for a local project. This will be released on a special vinyl album, but it will also appear online. So stay tuned. :)
The special vinyl album I talked about has been released :)
The music is also available on Spotify, here's a link to our song: Calculated - We're still here (https://play.spotify.com/track/7hySvhFKwdoMefZvs5NvZO)
Just posting a update for the few regulars who like our music. :)

They're still doing gigs, but I don't know if they've made a new site and uploaded any fresh material.
Woah, I was just browsing old Calculated stuff because I'm in a nostalgic mood and now I see this haha. :)
The band Calculated no longer exists, unfortunately. Our drummer moved to Denmark, and we couldn't find a suitable replacement for him.
However! We're still doing gigs with a new band called Tea Rex. The music is still very much Oostrum-style, but it's a bit lighter and more upbeat compared to Calculated. In fact, we just recorded an EP, which will be released on November the 16th. I'll post the link once it's available online.

still sounds like something between old aerosmith and deep purple.
those two girls on the left are ugly.
Lol! :D
Deep purple will always be an influence, especially the hammond organs.
Although this track was mostly inspired by more recent bands like Queens of the Stoneage and De Staat (Dutch band)

then listen to aerosmith's version of 'come together'.

the bass and vocals sound aerosmith
Hey, I didn't know Aerosmith covered that song! Pretty cool rendition.
Yeah I can hear what you mean. :)
Someone actually made the connection to "Come together" before, must be the vocal melody which has a similar feel.
(unintentionally though).
Here's a song from De Staat to compare. The similarities are within the music and the groove, not the vocals:

maybe in the rhythm and somewhat in the tempo.
but the key and tone are different.
at least to me, but I'm not a musician.
"Being inspired by" is a very broad thing for me, the final result might end up in a completely different place.
I wrote that song after attending a concert by The Staat and I wanted to write something in a similar vein.
Without straight up copying a riff of course. :)
I grok now.
I was inspired by the Red series of Duke3d maps (and also the mapper), but that doesn't mean I intended to copy-paste the person's work.
Just popping in to say that our EP will be available on Spotify on december the 7th. :)
We already posted one song in advance on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzPzjC2wYCo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzPzjC2wYCo)
It's the studio version of Agree to disagree.

Wish I could do more to support.
Thanks! Appreciate the moral support :)
Another update from me, we made a music video! I did the editing myself, which is just as hard and time consuming as mapping ;)
Also: we're going back to the studio to record new stuff this summer (which will probably be released somewhere in september).
