No one is going to start paying people to map. If we have to pay people in order to have maps, the community deserves to die.

IIRC the "no updates" rule was installed after some authors kept rereleasing new patches of their map? I can see how that's annoying for a site like this. Several new patches are understandable if it's a big TC or a mod, but a single level?

That "some authors" is Paul Bolduc. He's a bit OCD about fixing menial bugs which would be fine if it concerned only him. Reviews are also not beta testing platforms; you cannot just keep fixing the map and expect the review to be updated every step of the way. That's what beta testers are for. (Not saying Bolduc has engaged in this kind of behavior but several others have.) But of course a draconian no-updates policy is silly and in general mappers should be encouraged to update their maps (within limits!).

Have you considered going for a rainier theme with the rainy clouds and all? (Remember you can easily change the sky texture all over the map with one key combo.)

The action is pretty decent and fun but it gets repetitive quite fast mostly due to the recycled Doom maps, which I have played a million times.

It's not laziness. I just think that shading is not the most essential part in a daylight/outdoor maps. The map is detailed enough. If you think that it's not detailed, then you just crazy. If you want the jewelry, go play that Flaming Shipwreck instead.

Shading definitely is a big deal in a daylight map like this; I cannot think of many things that are more important. In any case, even if there are things that you consider more important, that's no excuse to neglect lighting.
I'm also not asking for the Flaming Shipwreck level of details. Most of the tech rooms in this map are just empty square rooms with a few computer panels, if even that. Even a rudimentary level of trimwork could have made it look a lot more interesting.

Look, I'm not trying to create a masterpiece here. I tried to make a good map, which will be big and open, I tried to create the atmosphere of big location and I think I've achieved it. I think it's a good map. I like it myself.  But I constantly get sick while reading your reviews, Mikko. I think I will not read them from now on.

I really fail to see your problem. The map scored 86 out of 100, and it's in the Hot Maps section. And you're pissed off at that?

Ooh, someone's got sand stuck in his vagina!

I agree that the map lacks proper shading (which is hard to do with such a big-scale map) and some areas can be more detailed, but calling the map lazy and annoying, and giving it such a score is just ridiculous.

So what else besides laziness exlains the blatant lack of shading & detailing? It's not like 3d lighting isn't the easiest thing ever to implement.

QuoteNo wonder you such a picky reviewer.

Lol!

Duke 3D Modifications / Re: Duke Forces

You could market it as a "standalone Duke3D mod"; that way it shouldn't attract any unwanted attention like a "free Star Wars game" might, and most gamers would still instantly notice that they don't need a copy of Duke3D to play it. There are many Star Wars mods on ModDB & such and this would be kinda like them, i.e., a mod, not a game.

Really like the new area. Posted a review on MSDN a few days back.

Lol, as a matter of fact I do; it was basically at I:\stuff from previous hd\stuff from an even older hd.

I've received a load of flak for the inflexibility of the site, and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it. I like Puritan, and he's a good person, but sometimes he can be too much of a hardass. It's his site and he can run it as he sees fit, but I'm not feeling it, and I'm tired of some of the messages I have to field about the forum and the files hosted because I'm associated with the site and it's assumed I have some control over it.

Yeah that's the problem with using design templates.

It's definitely a bit of a new look and I like it!

Yeah it's annoying, just have to get used to the fact that most people browse websites on their phones or something.

Why would your host require something like that? Isn't that your problem?
