A few words with Maarten v. Oostrum by Puritan on February 17-2013

Age : 25 (2013)
Location : Netherlands
Occupation : Pet Shop

CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Maarten : I think it was back in 2000. I remember it felt awesome to build my own maps, even though it was just "fooling around" without reading any help files.

CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Maarten : The first more serious map was a weird alien planet-like map. Can't remember the name, sadly lost it as well (even though it looked really bad). My first released map was "The Big City" (maa2.map).

CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Maarten : Probably ABBA (Another Big Base Attacked). It's fun to play, most of the design is really nice, it has a story, the whole EDF base feels cool too. I do regret these horrible .VOC files though, my voice acting and English were really bad! X64-2 is more original though. I somehow found my own "alien" style since then

CGS : How many maps have you done?
Maarten : 5 SP maps, 2 DM-maps. And lots of collaborations (CBP's, OGBB, AMC pleaser, Imperium and many more).

CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Maarten : Pascal Rouaud from the ROCH series. I loved those maps. Bob Averill got me inspired too (especially the tricks like the "clear water" trick). And of course my brother from the RED serries.

CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Maarten : Many styles! Back then in X64-2 I did listen to a lot of metal. It did change to MANY styles, could be just accesible music, psychedelic and at same time rock/metal.

CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Maarten : Maybe at the start I was being somewhat jealous on high scores. Since I released ABBA it felt more like a "happy community", so I didn't really care about the score anymore (but of course I was satisfied with the high scores it got). "Imperium" was also built in a "relaxed" way.

CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Maarten : Barely. Imperium was my last big effort. Maybe some day I'll build some, since I have good internet again at my own place. No plans for big maps like ABBA anymore, though.

CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Maarten : Same as above. Since I didn't have internet for some months (and I was busy with other things), I couldn't really play Duke, or check some maps.

CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Maarten : Hard question.. MANY great maps are released. Roch6 was a long time favourite though.

CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Maarten : Great effort. I did enjoy it, especially at the time it got released. They did really great work. I have to admit I only play classic mode these days.

CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Maarten : Honestly I barely game anymore. Music projects like my band Calculated and other hobbies took me away from it. Still, I did love to play Unreal someday. That game is fantastic. Other games like Half-life/Doom3/Unreal Tournament would be nice to play again too.

CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Maarten : Everyone that's still there: you're awesome! I had a really great time with all you guys on the forums and all efforts on projects, we really made this game alive amazingly long.
