A few words with Supertanker by Puritan on April 29-2014

Age : 22 (2014)
Location : United States
Occupation : Teaching Assistant (Computer Science)

CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Supertanker : I first played with BUILD when I was around 13 or so. I found it on my Duke Nukem (Atomic Edition) CD and immediately started to explore.

CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Supertanker : The first map I remember making was a giant Sector Effector/Sector Tag test. Unfortunately I don't have the files anymore (or maybe they're on some old CDs/floppies). I didn't release that one. The first map I released was a little map called EDF Base, which started a string of little mediocre maps until FOS Station.

CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Supertanker : Cherenkov Station, followed by Area 27. I love the outdoor areas in the latter and the lighting in the former.

CGS : How many maps have you done?
Supertanker : Three "good" released maps, a half-dozen lousy released maps, and hundreds of little unreleased projects. (Moonbase Regula 1 is STILL on my hard drive waiting for me to finish it...and the project started in 2005!) Some of the maps are nearly polished; most of them are half-baked.

CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Supertanker : Everywhere and everything. Games, art, the real world. Look around!

CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Supertanker : Everything. Music without lyrics makes it easier to concentrate, but occasionally I get into a grove with other songs as well. The song usually ends up on loop for several hours without me noticing.

CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Supertanker : No. Our community is too small and precious to have anything more than a friendly rivalry among mappers.

CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Supertanker : Not in months. I still have some maps I'd like to finish, given free time.

CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Supertanker : No, but again, I'd like to start playing when I have free time again.

CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Supertanker : That's like asking me to pick a favorite song of all time! I don't even know if I can pick just one. But I've always liked Mikko Sandt's maps, especially Earth Base. His maps have a very distinct and succinct appearance about them and are great fun to play.

CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Supertanker : I couldn't run Polymer on my old computer, so I never had much of an opinion. From a mapping perspective, true room-over-room support is incredible (although it's fun to work within the traditional Duke 2.5D limitations). I'm glad that EDuke32 supports both classic duke mode and the OpenGL renders so the player can choose his or her gameplay experience. As for the HRP, I haven't seen the project in some time, but it looked fairly promising the last time I checked. I'll have to try it again someday soon.

CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Supertanker : I like games with a focus on puzzles and plot. System Shock 2 is one of my favorites. So is the Half Life series, Portal, and the Bioshock series. I particularly enjoyed the original Half Life because I liked its level editor. I never released a map for it, though.

CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Supertanker : I'd like to say thanks to all the inspirational mappers and modders and artists who keep breathing new life into our beloved game--it astounds me that new content is still being released so many years after the game's release. I'd also like to thank the players who play our maps and mods; y'all rock. Here's hoping for another good few years of Duke!
