A few words with Arghantyl Aryostaz by Puritan on October 2014

Age : 23 (2014)
Location : France
Occupation : Professional gambler.

CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I've started to play and map for DN3D in 2010. My begins on Build were hard, being unable to do anything of this black window divided into squares and bored by the poor official tutoriels. Installing mapster32 and finding Bishop's tutorials were just true oxygen breaths.

CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : My first token was a sewage linked to a kind of secret base. No shading,no spritework,no architecture it was a masterpiece ;) If i find it one day on my hardware,i will delete it to abbreviate his pain

CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : First ,my best dukematch map is certainly Spaceship to fix. Perfect gameplay for duels and good for more people,it's just the complex and hard map settled up with a clean aesthetic design i wanted to do. It was my first public map tough so it needed about 9 updates through 3 years of development due to my lack of experience to reach perfectness.
My favorite solo map is one of my mod still in development. The level takes place on a cruise boat attacked "again" by aliens while Duke was in vacation. I m proud of it because it proved than my new methodology of mapping leaded the construction where i've planned to do, not trying anymore to fix desperately bribes of levels to achieve something.

CGS : How many maps have you done?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : Actually i released 8 dm maps,2 solo maps,1 cooperation map. And there's still 8 solo maps complete in my mod ,and 2 specific little coop maps called firefights that i will release in a pack one day.

CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : From everything. It can be from other levels of video games,a real place,a scene in a novel or a movie. Also i bet than it 's like every one : a lot of nice ideas but lack of time and energy to achieve them.

CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I listen music or audio book only when i do repetitive tasks or i just follow a list of things i ve planned . When i design the aesthetic part,i require a full concentration which i can only find in silence.

CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I think than little competitions on specific themes could wake up the community from his lethargy. Also it never came in mind to fight maps of others.
I feel it more as a personal challenge ,improving our skills and qualities through an artistic activity.

CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : Yes,and i dont have in mind to stop.
I will first finish my mod which is 66% completed and then focus on cooperation maps. There 's a true market there since no one cared about it, every levels suffering from lack of ammo/ennemys/health.

CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I dont play anymore maps beside my online duking time. Sometimes i search cheap maps to fix to make from it a good cooperation fest but that's all.

CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : My favorite map is "Hollywood Holocaust" or E1L1 which gave me the will to design levels. Used to play linear levels from modern games,i ve been just astonished to see the multiple ways and the liberty of exploration allowed to end it. I was like a line on a paper discovering the third dimension. :D
My other favorite maps are from "Roch Series" which gave me a complete sight from the ability of the engine. Even after all these years i m still in admiration for the aesthetic work of the late levels and the number of tricks used in. These levels convinced me i had to build maps for Duke nukem 3D :)

CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I dont use it and i preferred anyway good old sprites when i was playing Duke+ My PC is anyway too weak to handle that.
At least HRP gives a easy way for young mappers to build levels i guess. Dynamic lights replacing hard and long sprite/sector work.....

CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I play on Zandronum ,a multiplayer modern port for Doom 1/2,especially a mod called All out of War 2. I wonder how an older game can have a so awesome software while Dukematching is still stuck in the stoneage P2P protocol.

CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Arghantyl Aryostaz : I would like to say thanks for all ,players, mappers, modders and coders, which kept DN3D alive through the years. Still hoping that one day, we will enjoy true multiplayer support that Duke deserves.
