ALIEN FUSION TOWER, circa February 02, 2009, by Fernando Márquez, with contributions by Fernando Calvo
Duke must get inside a fusion power station and take out the reactor core.
A medium sized level with a good design and simple layout. A nice looking level with excellent architecture, good shading, detailing and sprite work. The texturing is good for the most part, but does get a bit over used and tired in a few areas. There was a slight problem with the elevator doors at the top floors. When Duke goes to open the door, the elevator wants to go down creating the possibility of getting squished if you don't bolt through the portal fast enough. The ending was a bit abrupt and unexpected too.
Game play is good, but not very challenging. The combat in the tower was kind of weak because Duke is over armed. There's plenty of ammunition for the shotgun and machinegun to take care of the weaker enemies; and the devastator, RPG, shrinker, and freezer are more than enough for the tougher enemies. The battle with the commanders in the final passage was fun though; especially dodging the missiles while running up the ramp. But again, with a fully loaded shrinker at hand you can only die if you're careless. There are a few button puzzles to figure out, some are pretty well designed, and a few key cards to find, but nothing too taxing. This would have been a decent challenge with the elimination of the shrinker and the scuba tank. A nice map to do a few puzzles and shoot up a few aliens.
