============================================================================= Title : Asylum Filenames in Zip : Asylum.map, Asylum.txt, Asylum.con, Asylum.art, Asylum Con Info for Mapmakers.doc, Asylum.bat Completed : October 2000 Author : Bob Masters E-mail : bmasters@dreamscape.com Web Page : www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Chasm/7733 Other Levels : Starship Troopers TC ("Lost Contact" map), 2Bizarre, Orion Prime 1 & 2 Description : This map uses an altered CON file, to create many wild new effects: * New enemies * New alien abilities * New goodies! Feel free to use these exotic improvements in your own maps. See the bottom of this text file for a list of the enhancements. *** You must run Asylum.bat to install the new Con and start the game! The Story : Duke has heard that the aliens are screwing around with advanced scientific experiments. They're tampering with forces of nature that no one should be messing with! They've even discovered the secret of invisibility. When Duke tells the government about this, they declare him insane. Imagine, aliens working in an invisible building? Duke is quickly shipped off to the Thorne Asylum for the Mentally Deranged. No one realizes that this asylum has been captured by the aliens. Now they have Duke right where they want him, locked in a padded cell. Duke must somehow escape from the asylum, locate the nearby invisible building, and get the alien infestation out of the research center for good! ================================================================================ * Play Information * Single Player : Yes DukeMatch 2-8 Player : No Cooperative 2-8 Player : No Difficulty Settings : No Duke Versions : Compatible with all versions v1.3 (Original) thru v1.5 (Plutonium) New Art : Yes New .CON Files : Yes ======================================================================== * Construction * Base : New level from scratch Level Editor(s) Used : Build Construction Time : Months Known Bugs/Problems : This map uses the FrameEffect (motion blur) for the fast aliens. There seems to be a bug in the game engine that causes a blue brick graphic to appear briefly if a FrameEffect alien is blown up. It's harmless though. ======================================================================== *** Important Information *** Installation : To play, you must run the batch file (Asylum.bat)! Otherwise, the new con file won't take effect. Don't use the map by itself! ======================================================================== * Permissions * Map makers may use the Asylum.CON file, as long as you give me credit for it. I encourage using its new features in your own maps. If so, create a batch file similar to Asylum.bat, and distribute it with your map and the con file. You don't need the art file; the con doesn't require it. Feel free to post Asylum.Zip on your webpages, or ask me about distributing it on other media. Please don't modify the con unless you notify the users that you made changes to it. Please do NOT copy portions of the Asylum map into your own maps. This level is not made by or supported by 3D Realms. ================================ === LIST OF CON ENHANCEMENTS === ================================ *** NEW ENEMIES *** Flying Saucers - They fly all over and occasionally pause to shoot at you. Terminators - Some pursue you, and some stand still. Still others patrol a specific area. All of them explode when they get near you. Mechanical Spiders - They bite you when they get close, costing you health. Rapid-fire Turret Gun - These supercharged turrets shoot non-stop rapid-fire lasers at you. Flying Sparks - This fascinating phenomenon can be seen in the Power Core of the Asylum map. *** GOODIES *** Rubber Cans - You can now carry some of the rubber trash cans and drop them elsewhere, to use for climbing! When you find such a can, the top lid will be green instead of red. You'll also see instructions on the screen: Face the can and hit Space (the "Use" key) to pick up the can. Duck and hit Space ("Use" key) to drop it. Just like in real life, you may drop it accidentally if you go through difficult terrain or transporters. If so, you'll see a message saying that it's fallen behind. Bonus Buttons - they resemble spinning "Nuke" respawn markers, but color-coded differently. They usually occur in groups. Each one provides a small bonus when you get near it: Green: 3 Health points Blue: 5 Armor points Red: 1 Shotgun ammo Red/Yellow: 1 RPG ammo *** NEW ALIEN SPEEDS *** Super-Fast aliens - these move about 5 times normal speed. Slow aliens - these move about 1/3 normal speed. *** DUKE THEME MUSIC *** This music is normally impossible to play inside a map, but not any more. *** INVISIBILITY *** Due to the aliens' weird experimentation, just about any kind of item can now be invisible. Aliens, ammo, weapons, health, and other goodies are awaiting you in this map. The aliens don't stay invisible 100% of the time, so be observant and you'll catch a glimpse of them. When you shoot an invisible alien, you'll see their blood flying midair, which looks cool. The aliens lose their invisibility when they die. *** ANTI-GRAVITY *** Some of the aliens were scientifically altered, making them weightless. They float up and down, even after being killed. Fortunately, any weapons they spawn will fall, so you can get them. Small medkits and bonus buttons can also float sometimes. To use these new features in your own maps, see the file "Asylum Con Info for Mapmakers.doc".
