Age : -
Location : Norway
Occupation : Supervisor of Logistics.
CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Puritan : Well, it was back in '96. A friend of mine used to have a small cabin in the woods where we used to go for some drinking and R and R. Some of the guys were playing DN3D on LAN. I was more into beer and teasing the chicks....
My friend was very occupied with map making for their DM events and he often asked me if I would like to build some. At that time I didn't feel like learning the editor.
A couple of years later I opened Build.exe and gave it my first shots.
CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Puritan : Oh my, my first map was pure crap made out of white lines ( 2D mode) only. And with sprites as wall textures. It was just me foolig around with something I've never done before.Later on I downloaded the map FAQ's by Jonah Bishop and Brett G.Moser and started to learn the Build editor.
CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Puritan : That would be hard to decide... I think it must be "Unaided Mission" or "Nostromo". If I had to choose it might be "Unaided Mission". I can't really tell why. I think it has something to do with the 'mood' or 'feel' that map is giving me. I remember enjoying myself when building it. It felt somewhat, right!
CGS : How many maps have you done?
Puritan : Man, that's hard to tell. I think I've released some twenty maps in the past. I've built a few in the early days just for the sake of learning the Build editor. You should all be happy that they was never released!
Having said that: I'm almost done with the third map in the "Afterglow" series.
CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Puritan : Lots of places...I like to build close to real life. That would be a map inspired by a movie or it could be a cool real place.
Sometimes I just have an idea about a story bouncing around my head. Then I have three options:
1.Build a DN3D map
2.Write a song
3.Write a small poem or a short story
CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Puritan : Yeah, of course! Music is born from creativity and so is a map!
I don't have any particular genre or band I'm listening to. I sometimes fire up my Windows media player and set the controls to random.
But it must be music with a lot of groove and rhythm in it. Eurodance music such as "Fragma" or metal music such as "Exodus" might work.
CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Puritan : Not at all. Except from competing with myself!
I always want to build a map that I'm proud of. I also don't wanna disappoint those who are following my mapping and are spending some of their time playing my maps.
CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Puritan : The above answers should tell the tale...
I'm addicted to Build. I've said many times to myself: "This is your final map".
yeah right! :)
Since I'm done with kids and stuff I got time on my hands to run this site and also stay glued to Mapster32 several hours a week.
CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Puritan : Of course! I'm playing everything that is released these days.
In addition to that I'm playing through lots of old maps that I got stashed away on my HD. Sometimes I comes across a decent map that I'm sharing with the community on this site.
Yeah, give me some credit here folks....I'm playing DN3D maps for your sake!! (j/k)
CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Puritan : Well that's a tough one. I really don't have a favourite map.
There are so many good maps out there. But I have a predilection for quality stuff from the early years. Remember that it's easier to build a decent map today than it was in the 90's.
CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Puritan : My greetings to all the ones that are spending time on Duke Nukem 3D stuff!
Personally I don't think polymer belongs to DN3D. If you're into dynamic lights and scripted sequences I think it's better to spend your time on the Source engine or the Unreal engine.
But I'm very happy about TX and others about making the EDuke32 and Mapster32 ports. Hail to you guys!
CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Puritan : I'm not too occupied with games. But I appreciate Half-Life 2 series and the enormous amount of high quality user made maps/mods that has been released over the years.
I'm also firing up both Doom 3 games from time to time.
Does poker count in this matter??... :)
CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Puritan : Yeah I do.
Thank you all for being a part of this tiny but nevertheless strong community!
I think that no other game will have a so strong and faithful community sixteen years after it's final release as DN3D.
I would also like to thank you for your support and understanding about my little Duke Nukem adventure.
Finally, my greetings and respect to Forge for his excellent reviews and his good hearted mind!
This site would have been a less interesting place without your helping hand ;)
