A few words with Zykov Eddy by Puritan on October 27-2012

Age : 19 (2012)
Location : Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Occupation : Student, mod/game developer.

CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Zykov Eddy : I think it happened in the beginning of 2007, when I first discovered a build editor included in my Shadow Warrior edition. I had a great fun playing with the editor and I still have some of my first maps made for SW. Later I discovered mapster and started making maps for DN3D.

CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Zykov Eddy : My first maps were made for SW, although they weren' playable, because I didn't knew how to run them in the game. I still have some of these maps, and maybe some day I'll show them to the public. As for the DN3D, my first map was just a big room where I had fun with some Build features. The second map was called 8048.map and it was a clumsy reproduction of my apartment. These two maps are available on my blog, as well as the third map, E0L1.

CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Zykov Eddy : Sunshine complex is probably my favorite map, even though it was made for a couple of days.

CGS : How many maps have you done?
Zykov Eddy : Hmm... It's really hard to say, I have a lot of projects which incude more than one map. I'll try to count them all:
Moonbase Accident (9 maps)
Infenstation in time TC (+/- 20 maps)
Sonic the hedgehog 3D (6 maps)
The chronic. level 1: Bad night (with Sanek)
A.dream series (3 maps)
Arctic alert
Ololosh
The opposition
Sunshine complex
Aliens Demo
Crazy russians: Revenge of vodka
The Wall: an interactive rock opera
Quake TC demo (2 maps)
The Stairwell (SCP 087)
Kill City
Slender's Woods
Overall, I think I've released +/- 51 maps.

CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Zykov Eddy : When I started making Moonbase Accident, I was mostly getting inspiration from the second episode of DN3D. William Gee's maps also inspirated me a lot, you can see a lot on influences from his space maps in this mod. For the other projects I was mostly getting inspiration from other people's maps. Later I started getting inspiration from classic rock songs (I love classic rock!), movies (Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead inspirated me a lot), games (such as Sonic the hedgehog series) and mods (Afraid of monsters inspirated me to make A.Dream series).

CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Zykov Eddy : I listen music almost every time I'm starting to develop something. I'm listening everything that feets the mood of the projects. For example, when I was making Sonic 3D, I was listening to video game soundtracks. For the most part I'm listening to classic rock.

CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Zykov Eddy : No, I guess. I'm just making my projects because I feel like it.

CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Zykov Eddy : Yes, but I just released my new project and will probably not touch mapster in months, since I'm kinda tired of all this.

CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Zykov Eddy : No. Sometimes I download random maps just for curiosity, but I don't actually play them, I just go around with God mode or look them up in the mapster.

CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Zykov Eddy : It's really hard to decide. I think Red 5 is probably my favorite map. This map inspired me a lot. I also want to mention my second favorite map of all time, Buenos Aires Explosive Remake made by DavoX. This map rocks! Sadly, it's pretty much underrated.

CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Zykov Eddy : Well, I like them. It's really sad that Polymer is not optimized yet, I would like to use it for my international projects.

CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Zykov Eddy : Here's the list:
System shock,
War?raft,
Heroes of might and magic (2, 3),
Half-life (1, 2),
Doom (and other classic FPS games),
Sonic games,
Quake (1, 2, 3),
Unreal,
Zero tolerance,
Starcraft,
Dune: the battle for Arracis,
Rayman Raving Rabbids,
Captain claw,
Worms series.

CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Zykov Eddy : The DN3D community leave a huge impact on me. This is probably the first community which I accessed after I got the internet and I'm still visiting Duke related forums. Long live DN3D community! Keep rockin' guys!
