Age : 25 (2013)
Location : Belarus, Minsk
Occupation : Lead Level designer at Wargaming at World of tanks(last korean map is my first release though).
CGS : When did you first get in touch with Build/Mapster?
Devastator : When i was 13 or 14 or so.
CGS : What was your first map, released or unreleased?
Devastator : First map was Space vessel, one of the shittiest map ever made :D you can still find it in the bottoms of MSDN.
CGS : What is your favourite among your own maps?
Devastator : My favorite is aquatic hive, i think it was most creative one, and more it has some places which i recreated from the dreams i was seening while working on this map, one is the place with eggs and hanging babes where you need to activate all switches.
CGS : How many maps have you done?
Devastator : For duke nukem it's like 12 released maps, and there were like 7-10 unreleased shitty maps.
CGS : Where do you get inspiration from?
Devastator : I don't know for sure, but: women, nature, death, space, madness, dreams.
CGS : Do you listen to music whilst mapping? If so, what did you listen to?
Devastator : I can but anyway while i map my brain switches off from audio channel so, i sually put some dumb song in eternal loop for a work day and here it goes)
CGS : Do you see mapping as competitive?
Devastator : It can be viewed in such a way, but I still think mapping is about creativity expression and compassion(for players who will play your map)
CGS : Do you still touch Build/Mapster?
Devastator : Not anymore, wish i could get back to it, after many engines I've seen Build is still most remarkable, thanks Ken Silverman for my sweet childhood!
CGS : Are you playing any DN3D maps these days?
Devastator : Sometimes I do, I play my own maps, its like look in the past of your life, review your flaws and just for the sake of my ego.
CGS : What's your favourite map of all time?
Devastator : If I have had to choose form all the games I'd say it is the world of Arcanum - one great map.
If I should speak about duke nukem - it is the Abyss from first episode, theres something mystic about it, something stange and attractive. It has one of the great atmosphere from all the maps I played. Simple and astonishing. Just one great beautiful map, where themes flow from one another.
It's really an example that you dont need a lot to do something really great. Waste dumps shrinking ray hidden in mountain, lava, alien ship, graveyard on the cliff, amazing!
CGS : What are your opinion about the HRP and Polymer projects?
Devastator : I like it, I did texture 1140 for it, and placed lights in 4th episode, it gave me a second breath for duking
CGS : What other games do you fancy?
Devastator : Last game I played was "I have no mouth and i must scream" - amazing horror quest by Harlan Ellison's short story. This game made me cry and smile at some points. My other favorites are Chrono trigger, Xenogears if you ask.
CGS : Finally, is it something you'd like to say to the DN3D community?
Devastator : Hell yes! First of all - big thanks to Kim Robinson for his duke3drepository, for his generosity, for making me a special page on his site, now i think that was kinda stupid and egoistic idea but thanks anyway) and for being a good great man )Mikko Sandt, for his great reviews Willam Gee, for his great maps from which i learned(very badly).
To russian community - stop drinking vodka and do good maps instead!
And to all other guys - You dont need a modern game to create great map, if you are really into level design, mapster is one great tool, and you can create awesome maps with it, and there are still a lot of opportunities, you will not find such creative setting of objects and textures in any in ANY modern game.
It's like level design paradise, there is really nothing better for pure level design than duke nukem. Go for it, make the greatest, most creative, most perverted and distorted, fucking brain-devastating, spirit-conscience penetrating, universe annihilating, unforgettabble, unsetting, simple, complex and magnetic, masterpiece, an artful land!
